To enter Second Life you need to open an account. This is free and easily done.
1. Open https://join.secondlife.com/
2. You will then be taken to a page where you can start the process of setting up a free account by creating your avatar.
- An avatar is your virtual ‘body’ in Second Life
- Choose from a range of basic ‘looks’
- Your looks – shape, gender, skin, hair, eyes, clothes, etc. – can all be customised once you enter Second Life
Tips
– Username
- Choose carefully as this is the name other people will see in Second Life.
– Date of birth
- You must indicate that you are over 13;
– Real Life first name and surname
- Here you need to consider if you are going to upgrade your account from a free one to a paying one so that you can own land and access Linden Lab support services. If so, you should enter your real details. If you are going to be using your avatar for professional purposes you should also consider giving your real details
- Other than for the above reasons, you do not have to enter your real details here
– Select account
- Choose a free account unless you intend to purchase items in Second Life (you won’t need to for Virtual Prato).
– Download & install Second LIfe
- Installing the Second Life viewer on your computer is easy and free of charge.
- Be sure to check the minimum computer and Internet connection requirements if installing on your own computer (http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php)
Visiting Chinese Island
– Click the URL below to enter Chinese Island.

- Click on the orange button “Visit this location”;
- You will be asked to ‘Allow this website to open two programs on your computer’. You should click ‘Allow’ both times;
- When your Second Life viewer opens on your screen enter your Username (your avatar name) and Password, then click Log In. You will be taken straight to the Chinese Island Welcome Area.
Visiting Virtual Prato
– Click the URL below to enter Virtual Prato.

- Click on the orange button “Visit this location”;
- You will be asked to ‘Allow this website to open two programs on your computer’. You should click ‘Allow’ both times;
- When your Second Life viewer opens on your screen enter your Username (your avatar name) and Password, then click Log In. You will be taken straight to the Virtual Prato Orientation Area.
