Getting to Chinese Island

To open a direct  link to Chinese Island, please click on the following SLURL (Second Life URL):

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Monash%20University%202/85/64/36

If you already have Second Life installed on your computer, by clicking “Visit this location” on the new page that opens and then clicking “Launch application”, your Second Life viewer / browser will be automatically launched. Then all you have to do is select login as per normal on the SL viewer/browser.

The process is the same if you are already in Second Life, you just don’t need to re-login.

If you haven’t established a free account and made an avatar on Second Life, please follow the instructions under the tab on this blog called “Getting Into Second Life”. Once you have done this, then go ahead and click the SLURL above to get to Chinese Island.

This link will take you directly to our central landing site on the island.

If you are in Second Life already and all else fails, type either “Monash University 2” or “Chinese Island” into the search field at the top right hand corner of your Second Life viewer / browser and follow the links.

Getting around the island once you are there

There are many places to visit on Chinese Island. When you first arrive you will automatically rez at the island’s Welcome Centre. In the Welcome Centre you will find a number of ‘information posts’ with information about the various sites you can visit around the island. Walk over to each information post and then click on the picture on the post to get information about the particular location on the island and to teleport directly to that site.

Panpan joins the Chinese Island team

Meet the newest member of our team, the cute and cuddly Panpan.

Panpan - 抱抱!抱抱!

Panpan – 抱抱!抱抱!

Panpan is more than just a cute panda bear! In fact, Panpan is our official Chinese Island guide!

If you have been to Chinese Island you might find it hard to know where you are on the island or what there is to see. Well, Panpan can help you! As you walk (or fly) around the island, click on Panpan’s ears regularly and her panda-sensor will search out the nearest information points to your location. If her sensor discovers and information point nearby, the information point (a Chinese stone lamp) will light up very brightly and give you some basic information in local chat. If you want to know more, you can click the lamp and you will get a notecard with more detailed information about the location you are at, as well as some interesting real life facts.

Panpan is in fact a very talented panda. In addition to her panda sensor, Panpan can also speak! Have you always wanted to learn a few basic phrases in Chinese for fun or to impress others? Well, click on Panpan’s head and she will help you say (and learn) a number of fun basic phrases! You can choose for yourself and then you (and anyone nearby) will hear her say the phrase verbally as well as in text in local chat. The text has the Chinese characters AND pinyin (the Romanised spelling of the characters with tone marks, which is very useful for learning pronunciation).

Panpan also has a number of accessories that are growing day by day! Currently, in addition to her Christmas outfit, she has two additional t-shirts (yellow and white), each with a different expression on it. There will be more accessories available in the future and Panpan will be adding to her other capabilities as well with simple language lessons and quizzes coming in the near future.

How do I get my very own Panpan?

To obtain the current version of Panpan in her Christmas outfit, go to Chinese Island and look for the big advertisement boards at each of the island bus stops. Simply click on the advertisement,  answer a simple question about China and Panpan is yours for FREE!

To obtain any of Panpan’s accessories or updated versions of Panpan herself, it’s really simple. All you have to do is answer a question about Chinese culture or language and the update / new accessory is yours! Look for accessories and new updated versions of Panpan in the Changcheng Village shop (the large one on Chunyu Road 春雨路).

See you on Chinese Island!
